Pendant lights

Pendant lights hang light exactly where you need it: over a kitchen island, above a dining table or in the middle of an entry. Metal is our most common material, often in gold, brass or black, with glass shades and globes and a few rattan and resin designs for a softer look. Most are 31 to 76 cm (12–30 in) wide, so there is pendant lighting for a small breakfast nook as well as a long island, and the hanging rules below keep the light at the right height.

Buying notes

Start with the height. Over a kitchen island or a dining table, hang the pendant so its bottom sits about 76 to 91 cm (30–36 in) above the surface: low enough to light the counter and cut glare, high enough to keep the view across the room. Anywhere people walk underneath, such as an entry or a hallway, keep at least about 2.1 m (7 ft) between the floor and the bottom of the fixture. Check each listing for whether the cord or rod length adjusts, so you can set the drop once it is installed.

Then plan the number and spacing. Over an island, two or three pendants spaced evenly usually look best, with each one about 15 cm (6 in) in from the ends of the counter so the light covers the whole surface. Smaller pendants suit a row of three; wider ones work in pairs or alone over a round table. Over a dining table, one generous pendant or a pair lined up with the table’s long side keeps the light centred on the meal.

Finally, choose the shade for the light you want. Glass shades and globes spread light widely and suit a kitchen that needs it bright; metal shades direct it down onto the counter and keep the fixture itself from glaring; rattan and woven shades give warm, patterned light for a dining room or an entry. Most pendants are hardwired, and a hardwired pendant needs a licensed electrician. Check each listing for the bulb type and maximum wattage before you order.

Questions

How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?

Hang them so the bottom of each pendant sits about 76 to 91 cm (30–36 in) above the counter. That lights the work surface without blocking the view across the kitchen.

How many pendants go over a kitchen island?

Two or three spaced evenly suit most islands, with each pendant about 15 cm (6 in) in from the ends. Use three smaller pendants on a long island, or two wider ones on a shorter island.

Do pendant lights need an electrician?

Most do: a hardwired pendant connects to a ceiling box and should be installed by a licensed electrician. Check each listing for the bulb type, the maximum wattage and whether the cord or rod length adjusts.
